Tempe Cyclocross Tuesday
This week I had the pleasure of checking out a preseason round of Tempe Cyclocross Tuesday. Meet up was scheduled for 7pm at Kiwanis Park. I showed up, said my hellos to friends who were racing, and had a beer (never leave the house without beer kids). By 715pm we were out on a neutral lap. The course was well laid out and easy to figure out. It was a hilly course laid out around the lake with lots of sharp corners and off camber gradients. As I rode with the homies I fell farther and farther behind. I've never been one for racing as I'm more than happy to just roll and experience new rides, but these guys version of neutral lap was lost on me.
After we all got back to the start, the racers lined up to start. Event organizers Wilson and Garrett explained the format of the race to make sure everyone was on board. Wilson screamed GO and Garrett hit the button on the toy stoplight timer, jumped on the bike, and took off. I settled in with another beer and watched the spectacle commence.
On lap two Wilson stopped all the racers for a doughnut handup / penalty. The riders were required to stop at the line and eat 5 doughnut holes from Bosa Doughnuts then get back on the bike and finish the race. Penalty for not finishing them or bailing out on the task was to stop and do 7 burpees. One rider ended up bailing on the snacks for more exercise, but only after already getting 4 holes in her mouth and spitting them all out.
The race continued after that and the riders were going all out head to head. On a corner right before one set of barriers Garrett slid out into Cody and took himself out by blowing his front tire. Cody grabbed his bike, jumped over the barriers and flew back out onto the course before I could even figure out what happened.
As the sun set, the riders did lap after lap until the end. Everyone was exhausted but had a great time. The riders all helped clean up the course marker cones and returned to the start for a bit of bullshitting and packing up. They decided to do another pre-season race in a few weeks after everyone realized they might not be at the peak physical stature they thought they were in. Then the ice cream truck showed up and it was a mad scramble for bomb pops.
